Breast Reduction

Heavy and large breasts are often a burden for you brody and mind. It can bring difficulties when you get older, such as physical pain and embarrassment. The surgery can be performed from late teens into the 70s. The surgery is often combined with a breast uplift, to achieve the best result for the patient. The surgeon usually advises undergoing a breast reduction in case you do not plan any pregnancies in the future. Breast reduction is technically known as mammoplasty. It is a surgical technique that reduces the breast size by achieving a smaller and firmer breast in a proportion that fits into the rest of the body.
Breast reduction is also performed on male breasts to reduce the tissue, which is also known as gynecomastia, that is characterized by excessive male breast tissue.
Breast Reduction is performed under general anaesthetic and the surgery takes 2–3 hours.

Before Surgery

We highly recommend you to stop smoking as this will influence the healing process of the wound. Smoking after the surgery is not permitted for the same reason as mentioned above. Medication could also affect the healing process. Medication such as aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs prevent the blood from clotting, which is not good for the healing process. Ask your doctor about preoperative instructions with your medication.

The Surgery

The surgery will be performed in a clinic under general anaesthetic, which will last for two to four hours. The surgeon will use stitches, which need to be removed after ten days.
The surgeon removes the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin that contribute to large, pendulous breasts. Anchor-like incisions will be made to achieve the desired shape by creating vertical line downwards from the areola and the horizontal line beneath your breast. In most cases, the blood vessels and nerves in the areola are repositioned together. In order to shape the smaller breast, vertical incisions are brought together. It might be necessary to separate the areola totally and relocate it, in case of significant reductions. The size of the areola can also be reduced if needed. The surgeon will discuss the appropriate technique to use in order to make the decision for the most appropriate technique to use.
The scars will not be visible in most clothing and swimwear. However, directly after the surgery, the scars will show red, firm and raised. Within three to twelve months the scars will fade and soften. Most of the time the scars become nearly invisible, but other scars may become wide and raised. Unfortunately, final scar appearance cannot be predicted prior to the surgery.

You must stay for two nights in the clinic and wear a compression bandage and a special surgical support bra. The bra should be worn at all times for two weeks to three weeks. If the surgeon introduced a drain, then this will be removed within 24 hours and the stitches will be removed in ten days after the surgery.

After Surgery

You are not allowed to sleep on the abdomen for a period of five weeks. Within a few days after the surgery, you can take shower. Your surgeon will give you further instructions on how to exchange the dressing. We strongly advise you to stay at your hotel for at least for three weeks to take you for a free checkup to the clinic, in order to keep seeing how your incisions recover.

You can return to your daily activities after a few days, however, you must strictly avoid lifting object over the head or make fast movements during the first four to six weeks. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to lift small children, therefore you need a plan for additional help during the initial recovery period.

Another important subject is the psychological effect of breast reduction. You might feel unhappy after a few days. This is normal and is caused due to the stress, general anaesthetic, lack of patience with the healing problems, more pain than you expected or the fact that because you miss your home and family. We will do everything to make sure you feel happy and home in Izmir.
