Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure for people who want to remove excess fat on specific areas to get a beautiful body shape. The surgery is commonly performed at the following areas: the hips, buttocks, knees, legs, abdomen, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. After the liposuction treatment most of the time it is necessary to perform a lifting surgery to get rid of the excess skin and tighten the skin. The liposuction treatment is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about one to two hours of surgery.
Before Surgery
We highly recommend you to stop smoking as this will influence the healing process of the wound. Smoking after the surgery is not permitted for the same reason as mentioned above. Medication could also affect the healing process. Medication such as aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs prevent the blood from clotting, which is not good for the healing process. Ask your doctor about preoperative instructions with your medication.
The Surgery
Before the surgery, the surgeon will mark the areas to be suctioned and may mark areas to avoid. The surgery consists of suction of the excess fat through thin tubes, which are connected to a vacuum system. Small incisions are required to access the area to be suctioned. This makes scarring virtually invisible to see. The surgeon will perform the liposuction under general anaesthetic.
Once you are under general anaesthetic, the surgeon will make tiny incisions around the areas to insert the thin rod in order to suction the excess fat from the marked areas. The rod will only vacuum the excess fat and will not harm your internal organs. The surgeon will inject tumescent fluid into your fat layer and afterwards the surgeon will use the rod to remove fat cells. After the surgeon is finished with removing the excess fat, dissolving stitches will be used. The dissolving stitches do not have to be removed later.
After Surgery
After the surgery, you will be asked to stay at the clinic for one night and wear a special compression bandage. In order to achieve a good result following a liposuction treatment, garments worn after the liposuctions are essential. If you do not follow the instructions of the surgeon and do not wear the prescribed garment, you may not be satisfied with the result and will have a baggy, lumpy, uneven and irregular result. Therefore following the instruction is highly recommended to achieve the desired result. You will have to wear this garment for four to six weeks after the surgery and after this it is not necessary to wear the underwear at night.
After one or two weeks you can return to your daily activities, however, you must avoid strong physical efforts until your body fully heals and is in balance with the new shape. Any bruising and swelling will vanish within one month. Bruising or inflammation of the treated area is common, but this will disappear over time. Results will become more visible over time as the loss of volume and skin re-modelling is continuous and gradual. A significant improvement in the figure and body shape will be achieved. The patient should rest at home for about a week.
